Top 5 Mattress Protectors of 2025 – A Buyer’s Guide

Don't buy a mattress protectors until you read this!

Choosing the right bedding and achieving a good night's sleep relies on three key factors: comfort, temperature control, and value for money.

Many people use cheap, thin mattress protectors, mainly due to their affordability or lack of knowledge about better options. Some skip this essential step altogether.

Experts suggest that we achieve the deepest, healthiest sleep when our bodies are cool, comfortable, and able to breathe. A good mattress protector should facilitate this by not retaining moisture and causing overheating, which can lead to night sweats. Additionally, it should be hypoallergenic and stay fresh, unlike traditional plastic protectors that allow pollen, household allergens, and other irritants to accumulate. These are two key examples of what to look for in a mattress protector.

Bamboo viscose mattress protectors have recently gained popularity because of their superior benefits. However, with thousands of options available, selecting the right mattress protector can be overwhelming.

Navigating the market for the best mattress protectors can be challenging, but it doesn’t have to be. To help, we have compiled extensive research on this emerging category, providing guidance on what to look for and what to avoid, ensuring you find the perfect protector to enhance your sleep.

  • Helps to fight off illness & infection

What You Need In The Perfect Mattress Protector

Taking all of the healthful attributes listed above into consideration, we've boiled down a list of four key characteristics you should always look for in a great mattress protector. Try to seek out all of these qualities:

Temperature Regulation

The problem with most mattress protectors on the market is they are not very versatile in regards to temperature regulation and temperature changes that come with the seasons.

For instance, cotton can work great for winter months but may leave you overheated and sweaty the rest of the year.

Bamboo mattress protectors are found to be naturally temperature-regulating and wick away moisture allowing you to stay cool, comfortable, and dry year-round.

100% Waterproof

When investing in a mattress protector, it is essential to look for one that is 100% waterproof. After all, the purpose of such a device is to mitigate damage from liquids penetrating your mattress. Failure to stop this from happening can result in a dirty, stained, odorous, and moldy mattress. Protect your biggest investment: your mattress.

Softness & Comfort

The best mattress protectors don’t crinkle and crunch under you as you sleep. In fact, bamboo mattress protectors are known for the silky soft feel and whisper-quiet while offering additional features.

Hypoallergenic & Stays Fresh

Traditional mattress encasements are a breeding ground for common non-living household allergens, attracting unwanted irritants in addition to causing bad odours and stains. Bamboo viscose naturally has hypoallergenic properties. The combined benefits of bamboo viscose allow your sheets and mattress to stay fresher, for longer (we found about 2x as long compared to traditional mattress protectors).

What To Avoid When Buying Mattress Protectors

Vinyl, PVC & Polyurethane

Vinyl, also called PVC, and polyurethane are some of the most used materials in mattress protectors. They are often used as the waterproof lining for the cover. However, just because they are widely used, doesn’t mean they’re safe. PVC is the easy way out when it comes to manufacturing waterproof and flexible protectors. The toxic phthalates in this can be extremely harmful, harmful, causing harm to your and your family's health.[9]

Polyurethane is another widely used waterproofing agent. It contains isocyanates, which are toxic to the respiratory system.[10] Contact with uncured polyurethane can contribute to breathing issues. This is especially true when it comes to people with preexisting respiratory diseases. These products are often not tested for safety.

When it comes to choosing your mattress protector, be picky. Check the ingredients and don’t settle for less than healthy.

Flame Retardants

Does your old mattress protector say ‘flame retardant’? You might think this is a highlight, but it actually might be doing more harm than good. Studies have shown that both animals and humans exposed to flame retardants, scientifically called polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or PBDEs, can lead to memory and learning issues, thyroid problems, delayed development, lower IQ, and decreased fertility. Some have even been linked to cancer!

It is extremely important to read the labels and scrutinize any product that claims to be flame retardant. Your health may depend on it.

PROS

  • Multiple Mattress Depths
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Fully Encases Mattress
  • Free Returns

CONS

  • Expensive
  • 100% Cotton Which May Not Work For All Seasons
  • Noisey
The Bottom Line

The All Cotton Mattress Protector is 100% cotton, extremely soft, and fully encases the mattress. However, it doesn’t possess all the features we’ve come to love with the Cosy House Collection Mattress Protector, like temperature regulation.

This protector features a wide range of depths to accommodate up to 16” mattresses. It is also hypoallergenic, stating it resists dust mites and other common allergens that tend to settle in during sleep.

However, despite these pros, there are cons to be considered. While it claims to be noiseless (as many brands do), many customers have noticed a crinkling sound when they move around the bed. This can be incredibly frustrating and interfere with sleep. The 100% cotton, as we’ve discussed, may not be suitable for all seasons.

Overall, this is a very nice mattress protector, but in our opinion, a little pricey for what is offered.

PROS

  • Waterproof
  • 16” Depth
  • 360-degree elastic

CONS

  • Expensive
  • No Temperature Regulation
  • Made with Polyester
  • 1-Year Warranty
The Bottom Line

Casper Sleep has been an extremely popular choice for mattresses in the last few years. But does their expertise transfer to mattress protectors?

With a 16” depth and 100% waterproof material, this super-soft mattress protector is a great option for those wanting to drop a little more money to save their mattress. The 360-degree elastic ensures that your protector stays on throughout the night.

However, there are a few cons. The polyester material that is protector is crafted from means that it lacks the temperature regulation properties of bamboo. In addition to being more expensive, there is only a year-long warranty which in our opinion is too short for something as essential as a mattress protector.

PROS

  • Dual-Layer Waterproof Protection
  • 10-Year Warranty

CONS

  • Expensive
  • No Temperature Regulation
  • Made With Polyurethane
  • Returns Limited/Not Accepted
The Bottom Line

We were excited to review the Purple Mattress Protector, since, like Casper, this company is known for its superior mattresses. However, we found that there were fewer pros than cons for the mattress protector.

Its dual-layer waterproof protection is essential when it comes to a mattress protector. Many other brands settle for a single layer, which in the long run can break down and leak. Purple also offers a 10-year warranty, which shows that they stand by their product.

Unfortunately, this is where the pros stop. The extra expense of this mattress protector should signify superior quality. However, like the Casper mattress protector, there are no temperature regulation qualities, making it only useful for a few months of the year. The waterproof backing is also made of polyurethane, which, as we discussed, can be toxic to the respiratory system.

PROS

  • Deep Pocket Fit
  • Hypoallergenic & Easy Care
  • Soft & Waterproof
  • 2-Year Manufacturer’s Guarantee

CONS

  • Shifts on Bed
  • Lacks Cooling Properties
  • Noisy
The Bottom Line

The Silentnight Mattress Protector is soft, waterproof, and hypoallergenic. However, it doesn’t possess all the features we’ve come to love with the Cosy House Collection Mattress Protector, like temperature regulation.

This protector features a wide range of depths to accommodate up to 30 centimetres. Despite the deep pocket fit, reviewers have stated that the mattress protector lacks a fully secure fit and can tend to shift throughout the night.

However, despite these pros, there are cons to be considered. While it claims to be noiseless (as many brands do), many customers have noticed a crinkling sound when they move around the bed. This can be incredibly frustrating and interfere with sleep.

Overall, this is a very nice mattress protector and the pros still outweigh the cons.
